He was extremely good at his job, with an eye for a sparkling headline and the ability to turn a reporter's sorriest offering into a yarn more than worthy of the paper it was printed on. Where I had to toil to come up with a headline half decent, he seemed able to conjure up something truly memorable almost at will and did so without fuss or fanfare. Unlike others who delighted in reading their brilliant (so they thought) headlines to the rest on the subs' table, Colin just got up and quietly dropped his in the check-sub's basket every time, no matter how good they were.
As others have stated on these pages, he possessed a fabulous mind, real wit, an unforgettably warm smile, and was a decent and kind man, ever willing to help a fellow sub struggling to make sense of a yarn. He was one of the genuinely good guys I've met in the game.
God bless you, Colin. Thanks for the generosity you displayed to me and so many others. I won't forget that, or you.
